If mandates are pushed we MUST have a single payer option. Any plan that includes mandates without a strong control on insurance premiums and medical costs will just be a gift to the insurance and medical special interest groups.
As I said in the “option” slot of your poll, My first choice is single payer but if as many seem to think that is impossible with our corrupted government that is unresponsive to the will of the people, I can live with a solid “public” option that bypasses insurance companies. Thanks for the opportunity to express my opinion.
The only people who like their present health insurance are those who don’t pay the premiums. That is until they lose their job. Most of the people who are not insured are the young and healthy, since they don’t need to see a doctor often they don’t want to pay the premiums. The cost of adding millions to a single payer plan is very inexpensive because these healthy people hardly need to see a doctor. We now spend twice as most as other industrial countries and we don’t live as long, have more infant deaths. We are far behind on a long list of other illness. A single payer plan will cover everyone and lower the cost of health care in the US by four billion dollars.
Take the 50% gross profit of the Health Insurance Companies and the Pharma companies and the 50% will more than cover all the uninsured and underinsured with ease. Medicare runs on about a 5% gross profit margin and works well. A combination of Medicare and Medicaid (Federally Paid) that emphasizes “preventative Medicine” and managed care will work better than anything else.
You worry about paying for it. Remove the cap on FICA and medicare deductions from salary – two things will happen, there will be more money for Single Payer Healthcare, SSI will be fixed and the outrageous salaries of the CEOs of the Banks, Health Insurance Companies, Multinational Manfacturers etc will come down once the company has to pay 7.65% on the high salaries and the “employee” has to pay the same on the multimillion dollar salaries.
Sixty percent of personal bankruptcies in our country were caused by medical bills and 75% of those bankrupted families had health insurance! Please call your Senators often to advocate for real reform. I believe single payer is best, a public health option at the very least is necessary. 202-224-3121.
My wife, Nina Silverman, & I, own & operate a healthcare facility. We are all to intimate with the short falls of our current system from both sides. For profit insurance companies whose sole purpose is to delay & deny services & payments in order to maximise profits is morally bankrupt. Processing claims consumes more than a third of our operating expenses & hundreds of man hours arguing with insurance reps. Lets get real about providing services to those most in need…jpm
76% of Americans support single payer, or at the very least a public option in Health Care Reform. If the final bill doesn’t include at least the public option, it’s worthless. It will do little if anything to address the nearly 50 million Americans who lack Health Coverage.
There is now a Democrat in the White House, a huge Dem majority in the House, and a 60-40 fillibuster proof Dem majority in the Senate. No more excuses. The Dmocrats HAVE the votes! It does NOT require 60 votes in the Senate to pass Health Care reform. It only takes 51 to get it done!
The problem is not just obstructionist fillibustering Republicans, but also “Blue Dog” Democrats who receive big $$$ from the Insurance Industry, HMO’s… to keep the broken Private Insurance system intact. To defend the Insurance Industry and its “Cash Cow”
The Washington process in the Senate often kills a good bill with its so called bi-partisan compromise. Every time the Democrats have extended the olive branch to Republicans, they got nothing in return but their hand slapped or bitten. It’s time to forget bi-partisanship. Senate Democrats need to get behind Pres Obama and insist on at least the public option. Anything less, is just trying to tweak an already failing system.
I don’t want to see that “Washington Process” in the Senate compromise a good bill to the point where Duke Cunningham can sail his yacht through the loopholes. It’s time for “Blue Dog” Democrats to get with the program. If they ignore their constituents and the 76% who support single payer or the public option, they will do so at their own peril in 2010 and 2012.
If Senate Dems can’t deliver, why should their constituents continue to vote for them? The Democrats need to find their spine, stand up to the Private Insurance Industry, HMO’s, and Big Pharma money, and get this done!
Anyone who has had the misfortune to have private insurance knows how inadequate it is. There are always copays, exclusions of vital procedures and services, excuses for not processing claims such as ‘pre-existing conditions’, and a variety of other bait-and-switch dirty tricks. We need to completely eliminate the medical insurance cannibals from our health care systems. I have spoken with doctors around the world who cannot believe and are absolutely appalled by the corrupt and fascist health care system in the USA. Single Payer NOW! If it is good enough for our bribed Congress, it is good enough for us!
Single Payer as outlined by HR676 and Health Care Now org…..what I do understand is ALL of us would have affordable health care….not greed as need, as provided in the other plans. Emphasize the best first.
I agree with Ralph that if it’s not possible to get univeral single payer now, at least we MUST have a strong option for people to choose a public, not a private insurer. Health is a public interest, just like education, the availability of electricity and heat/cooling for ALL, and environmental preservation that all sane people seek. The privatization of all these things is the Reagan Conservative dream and our nightmare.
We simply must take out the profit motive because these companies seem incapable of seeking reasonable profit for reasonable care. No, they can never get enough money for themselves (and their shareholders; one reason I personally find investment as we know it immoral. It makes all the people with that stock part of the problem. United Health Care ring a bell? They give their stockholders their dividend rewards, like Pavlov’s dog, while robbing us all of the simple need for reliable, high quality health care at a price that we all can pay. Healthcare is a right, not a privilege.
We need to stop worrying about the insurance and pharmaceutical companies and concern ourselves with the citizens who need medical coverage–universal, single payer is the only kind which will solve our health care problem. Let any senator who opposes health care for all other citizens volunteer to give up his/hers and join those uncovered many.
COSTS: the government already pays 60% of all health care costs between medicare, medicaid, va benefits, and government employees. the remaining 40% can be covered easily. see the utube video (only 4 minutes long) at
at the 3:09 minute mark on the video is a pie chart with the breakdown of costs for single-payer. it is a bogus argument that single-payer will cost more and bankrupt the country.
COMPROMISE: the democratic leaders need to be swamped with calls, letters, faxes, e-mails on our, the people’s choice for single-payer. we need to argue our goals, not begin with a weak compromise of public option because we fear losing. if we begin at a compromise, we will be compromised to death and end up with absolutely nothing but mandates to pay more for what doesn’t work.
MANDATES: mandates, as being proposed, do only 2 things: force more money being spent on insurance companies and try to force more people to buy more drugs. we need a real war on drugs in this country–stop Big Pharma from its drug pushing on the public! this is not health reform, but the ongoing pursuit of medical fascism.
Single payer, plain and simple.
Single payer actually empowers people to develop as sense of community, coast to coast, as it means we are all cared for and we take care of our own. It feels like that to me in England.

A single payer plan is the only fair and honest way. I support it 100%.
