My father was very ill with brain cancer for 15 months before he died. The bill for his health care came to over one million dollars. Lucky for the family, he had a government employee pension and health plan. Without that, my mother would have gone bankrupt and had to sell their home. Still, dealing with the insurance was a tremendous hassle and energy drain for my mother and the health care employees who had to spend too much time on the phone getting information, pre-authorizations, approvals for various treatments and medications, etc. It was a heavy emotional burden to pay for someone to get the care they needed. Yet we can’t imagine the financial devastation that would have occurred without his health plan.
