Report on 7/15/09 committee meeting here:

Green Roof Workshop with Paul Mankiewicz, Ph.D

Date: July 17, 2009
Time: 10 am – 4 pm
Location: Seven21 Media Center, 721 Broadway, Kingston, New York

A project of Sustainable Hudson Valley with Seven21, the Kingston
Green Trail Alliance, and the Second Chance Project, to bring the first of many green, vegetated roofs to cool and beautify midtown Kingston’s neighborhoods while saving energy and putting people to work. This workshop is for everyone who might be part of a green roof project: builders and architects, engineers and landscapers, landscape architects, and of course, roofers! Program fee
of $100 covers the full-day workshop, buffet lunch, handouts and participation in an ongoing network of practitioners for peer to peer support in mastering one of the most exciting green building techniques. $250 for teams of 4 and we’ll help you find teammates. Please pre-register by July 10 by calling Melissa Everett at 845-384-1189 or emailing melissae@earthlink.net.

Participants will learn the basics of green roof theory and practice including materials selection, site assessment, drainage and maintenance, and these specific how-to’s:

* quantify runoff from buildings, sidewalks, roadways and other infrastructure;
* determine catchment capacity needed to match specific storm water inputs;
* learn techniques to facilitate water filtration and storage to integrate on-site retention
through infiltration and below grade storage with conventional discharge methods;
* learn optimization methods for integrating on-site retention through infiltration and below grade
storage with conventional discharge methods;
* learn basic heat flow and water balance methods for evaluating cooling contribution from green
roofs and green spaces to the local environment;
* intro to basic methods for incorporating storm water and grey water in vegetated landscapes and
green roofs to minimize discharge and increase ecological productivity and biodiversity

Making the Case for Solar Energy in New York

Coykendall Science Building Auditorium, SUNY NP
Thursday, March 26th 2009
4:00 PM – 6:00 PM
Presented by Dr. Richard Perez. Solar energy is often dismissed out of hand as an expensive niche market for the few. However, looking at the facts suggests that solar energy may be the only resource that is large enough in scope and acceptable enough to carry us and the rest of the planet through the long term. Compelling evidence from experimental case studies will be presented. This lecture is presented as part of the SUNY New Paltz School of Science and Engineering Colloquium Series and is free and open to the public. For further information call (845) 257-3728 or visit www.newpaltz.edu/sse.
